In some situations there isn't much space for a filter changing mechanism between a camera and the main optics. Such a mechanism requires a certain amount of optical length which may not be available. Nienna's filter changer has been designed as the shortest one we are aware of anywhere in the world, specifically to function in setups where others won't fit.

Few accessories are as crucial for modern astronomical imaging as are filters. Common usecases are LRGB filters in order to take colour images with a monochrome camera, as well as contrast enhancing filters like UHC or narrowband filters like O-III, H-alpha and others.

If you only need to mount a single filter you can often thread it in at some point in the imaging train. Once you need to change between different filters, or between a filter and no filter, then you need a filter wheel or filter drawer / filter quick changer.

Filter wheels are the nicest solution where they can be used. They cost more and are heavier, but are particularly useful when remotely controlled from your astrophotography software. One limiting factor can be the mechanical length of typical filter wheels which might not fit in the existing back focus of a telescope.

Filter drawers / quick changers are usually cheaper and lighter, but oftentimes still need quite a bit of back focus.

Nienna filter quick changers have been designed for minimum possible mechanical length.

When developing our filter drawers we did everything to cut down on the required back focus distance by the following means:

  • The body of the quick changer is machined from the aluminium alloy 7075. This alloy is significantly stronger than more common alloys, allowing us to reduce material strength in several places whilst retaining a good mechanical stiffness.
  • We opted for unmounted filters from amongst others Baader-Planetarium, Astronomik or Optolong. These filters in sizes 31 mm, 36 mm or 50.4 mm don't require any extra space for a filter cell.
  • Filters are fixed in place inside the drawer by means of a very thin sheet of spring steel. Additionally we moved the mounting screws to the outside of the filter quick changer where they don't add to the effective length.

The filter quick change system has been developed by Nienna and is being produced in Nienna's own workshop in Sweden.

  • Telescope side connection: M48x0.75 (2" filter thread) or T2 (M42x0.75) female thread. Both connections are also available separately if you wish to change from one to the other.
